이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 세핀(serpin) 과에 속한다. 주로 간에서 발현되며 혈장으로 분비된다. 이 단백질은 단백질 Z, 칼슘, 인지질 존재 하에 응고 인자 Xa와 XIa의 활성을 억제한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 정맥 혈전증(venous thrombosis)과 관련이 있다. 이 유전자에 대해 대안적 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체들이 발견되었다.
