유전자 개요
이 유전자는 셀레늄 결합 단백질(selenium-binding protein) 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 셀레늄은 강력한 항암(anticarcinogenic) 특성을 나타내는 필수 영양소이며, 셀레늄 결핍은 특정 신경계 질환을 유발할 수 있다. 암과 신경계 질환을 예방하는 데 있어 셀레늄의 효과는 셀레늄 결합 단백질을 통해 매개될 수 있으며, 이 유전자의 발현 감소는 여러 종류의 암과 연관될 수 있다. 암호화된 단백질은 유비퀴틴화(ubiquitination)/탈유비퀴틴화(deubiquitination)를 매개하는 단백질 분해에서 셀레늄 의존적인 역할을 할 수 있다. 이 유전자에 대해 다수의 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체(spliced transcript variants)가 관찰되었다.
