이 유전자는 미토겐 활성 단백질 키나아제(MAPK) 계열 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 계열의 구성원은 증식, 분화, 전사 조절, 발달 등 다양한 세포 과정에 관여하며 여러 생화학적 신호의 통합 지점으로 작용한다. 이들은 MAPKKK, MAPKK, MAPK로 구성된 3단계 신호 전달 모듈을 형성한다. 이 단백질은 MAPKKK에 의해 세린 및 트레오닌 잔기에서 인산화되며, 이후 트레오닌 및 타이로신 잔기에서 하위 MAPK 표적을 인산화한다. 유사한 마우스 단백질은 간 장기 형성에 관여하는 것으로 보고된 바 있다. 이 유전자의 유사 유전자는 X 염색체 장완에 위치한다. 대체 스플라이싱은 여러 전사체 변이를 야기한다.
