이 유전자는 사이토카인(cytokine) 계열의 스트로마 세포 유래 알파 케모카인(chemokine)을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 G단백질 연결 수용체(G-protein coupled receptor)인 케모카인 (C-X-C 모티프) 수용체 4 (chemokine (C-X-C motif) receptor 4)의 리간드(ligand)로 작용하며, 발생, 면역 감시, 염증 반응, 조직 항상성, 종양 성장 및 전이 등 다양한 세포 기능에 관여한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 인간 면역결핍 바이러스 1형(human immunodeficiency virus type 1) 감염 저항성과 관련이 있다. 이 유전자에 대해 다양한 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이체가 발견되었다.
