이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 제3형 당단백질(glycoprotein)로, 주로 리소좀(lysosome)과 엔도솜(endosome)의 제한 막(membrane)에 위치합니다. 이 단백질은 막 수송 및 엔도솜/리소좀 구획의 재구성에 참여하는 것으로 보입니다. 이 단백질 결핍은 골반 결합 폐색, 청각 장애(deafness), 말초 신경병증을 유발할 수 있습니다. 사람을 대상으로 한 연구에서 이 단백질은 엔테로바이러스-71에 의해 발생하는 HFMD(수족구병)의 병인에 관여하며, 콕사키바이러스 A16에 의해서도 관여할 가능성이 있습니다. 이 유전자 돌연변이는 상염색체 열성 진행성 근간대성 간질-4(EPM4), 즉 행동성 근간대성-신부전 증후군(AMRF)을 유발합니다.
