SATB1은 핵기질(matrix)에 결합하고, 독특한 핵 구조를 통해 핵기질 및 scaffold-associating DNA에 결합하는 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 염색질(chromatin) 리모델링 인자를 모집하여 염색질 구조와 유전자 발현을 조절한다.
