SAA1은 혈청 아밀로이드 A(serum amyloid A) 계열 아포지질단백질(apolipoprotein)을 암호화하며, 전구전단백질(preproprotein)이 단백질분해를 거쳐 성숙 단백질로 가공된다. 염증(inflammation)과 조직 손상에 반응해 강하게 발현되는 주요 급성기 단백질(acute phase protein)로, HDL 대사와 콜레스테롤 항상성에도 중요한 역할을 한다. 높은 발현은 죽상동맥경화증, 류머티스 관절염(rheumatoid arthritis), 알츠하이머병, 크론병 등 만성 염증성 질환과 관련되고 특정 종양의 잠재적 바이오마커일 수 있으며, 성숙 단백질의 N-말단 부위는 황색포도상구균(S. aureus)과 대장균(E. coli)에 대한 항균 활성을 지닌다.
