이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 G 단백질 연결 수용체(G protein-coupled receptors)와 구조적으로 유사하며 내피세포(endothelial cells)에서 높게 발현된다. 이 단백질은 리간드(ligand)인 스핑고신-1-인산(sphingosine-1-phosphate)에 높은 친화도와 특이성으로 결합하며, 내피세포의 분화를 조절하는 과정에 관여하는 것으로 제안된다. 이 수용체의 활성화는 세포-세포 접착을 유도한다. 대안적 스플라이싱(Alternative splicing)은 여러 전사체 변이체를 생성한다.
