이 유전자는 망막아세트산(retinoic acid, RA)의 증식 억제 효과를 매개하는 핵 수용체(nuclear receptor)인 망막 X 수용체(retinoid X receptor, RXR) 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 수용체는 망막아세트산, 갑상선 호르몬(thyroid hormone), 비타민 D 수용체와 이량체(dimer)를 형성하여 각각의 반응 요소에 대한 DNA 결합 및 전사 기능 모두를 증가시킨다. 이 유전자는 비소세포 폐암(non-small cell lung cancer) 세포에서 유의하게 낮은 수준으로 발현된다. 대안적 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체가 기술되어 있다.
