이 유전자는 두 개의 시스테인 풍부한 퓨린 유사 도메인과 하나의 트롬보스폰딘 제1형 도메인을 가진 분비 활성 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 류신이 풍부한 반복 함유 G-단백질 연결 수용체(LGR 단백질)의 리간드이며 Wnt 신호 전달 경로를 양성적으로 조절한다. 마우스에서 이 단백질은 음와 세포 증식의 빠른 개시를 유도하고 장 상피 치유를 증가시켜, 화학요법으로 인한 부작용에 대한 보호 효과를 제공한다. 대안적 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사체 변이체가 생성된다.
