유전자 개요
RPS23은 단백질 합성을 촉매하는 소기관인 리보솜(ribosome)의 40S 소단위를 구성하는 리보솜 단백질(ribosomal protein)을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 리보솜 단백질 S12P 계열에 속하며 세포질(cytoplasm)에 위치하고, 효모(S. cerevisiae)의 리보솜 단백질 S28과 상당한 아미노산 유사성을 보인다. 리보솜 단백질 암호화 유전자에서 전형적으로 나타나듯, 가공된 위유전자(processed pseudogene) 여러 개가 유전체 전반에 분산되어 있다.
