RPS15는 단백질 합성을 담당하는 리보솜(ribosome)의 40S 소단위체를 구성하는 리보솜 단백질을 암호화하며, 이 단백질은 S19P 계열에 속하고 세포질(cytoplasm)에 위치한다. 인슐린종(insulinoma), 식도암, 대장암 등 다양한 종양에서 활성화되는 것으로 보고되었으며, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 만들어진다. 또한 게놈 전반에 걸쳐 여러 가공 위유전자(processed pseudogene)가 분산되어 있다.
