RPL23A는 단백질 합성을 담당하는 리보솜(ribosome)의 60S 대단위체를 구성하는 리보솜 단백질을 암호화하며, L23P 계열에 속하고 세포질(cytoplasm)에 위치한다. 이 단백질은 인터페론(interferon)에 의한 성장 억제를 매개하는 표적 분자 중 하나일 수 있으며, 효모에서는 대응 단백질이 26S rRNA의 특정 부위에 결합한다. 해당 유전자는 인트론에 자리한 U42A·U42B·U101A·U101B 소핵소체 RNA(small nucleolar RNA) 유전자와 함께 전사되고, 리보솜 단백질 유전자에서 흔히 그러하듯 여러 가공 위유전자(processed pseudogene)가 유전체 전반에 분포한다.
