유전자 개요
리보솜은 단백질 합성을 촉매하는 소기관으로, 작은 40S 소단위체와 큰 60S 소단위체로 구성됩니다. 이 소단위체들은 4종의 RNA와 약 80개의 구조적으로 구별되는 단백질로 이루어져 있습니다. 이 유전자는 60S 소단위체의 구성 요소인 리보솜 단백질을 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 리보솜 단백질의 L22P 계열에 속하며 세포질에 위치합니다. 이 유전자는 암호화된 단백질이 Halobacterium marismortui의 리보솜 단백질 L23과 아미노산 동일성을 공유하기 때문에 rpL23으로 불리기도 했으나, 공식 명칭은 RPL17입니다. 리보솜 단백질을 암호화하는 다른 유전자들과 마찬가지로, 이 유전자의 여러 처리된 유사 유전자들이 게놈에 흩어져 존재합니다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)는 여러 전사체 변이체를 생성합니다. 이 유전자와 인접한 하류 유전자인 C18orf32 사이에는 연조 전사(read-through transcription)도 존재합니다.
