두 종류의 스플라이스오솜(spliceosome)이 프리-mRNA(pre-mRNA)의 스플라이싱(splicing)을 촉매합니다. 주요 U2형 스플라이스오솜은 모든 진핵생물에서 발견되며 프리-mRNA 인트론의 99% 이상을 차지하는 U2형 인트론을 제거합니다. 일부 진핵생물에서 발견되는 마이너 U12형 스플라이스오솜은 드물고 뚜렷한 스플라이스 컨센서스 신호(splice consensus signals)를 갖는 U12형 인트론을 제거합니다. U12형 스플라이스오솜은 여러 개의 작은 핵 RNA(small nuclear RNAs)와 관련 단백질로 구성됩니다. 이 유전자는 U12형 스플라이스오솜의 구성 요소인 65K 단백질을 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 두 개의 RNA 인식 모티프(RNA recognition motifs, RRMs)를 포함하고 있어, 마이너 스플라이스오솜의 작은 핵 RNA 중 하나와 접촉할 가능성을 시사합니다.
