이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 칼시뉴린 A(calcineurin A)와 상호작용하여 칼시뉴린 의존적 신호 전달 경로를 억제하며, 이는 중추신경계 발달에 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 이 유전자는 다운 증후군(Down syndrome) 표현형의 최소 후보 영역에 위치하며, 다운 증후군 태아의 뇌에서 과발현된다. 이 유전자의 만성적인 과발현은 알츠하이머병(Alzheimer disease)과 관련된 신경섬유 다발(neurofibrillary tangles)을 유발할 수 있다. 대안적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variants)이 생성된다.
