RBP4는 리포칼린 계열(lipocalin family)에 속하는 단백질로, 혈액 내에서 레티놀(retinol, 비타민 A 알코올)을 운반하는 특이적 운반체이다. 간 저장소의 레티놀을 말초 조직으로 전달하며, 혈장에서는 RBP-레티놀 복합체가 트랜스티레틴(transthyretin)과 결합해 신장 사구체(kidney glomeruli)를 통한 여과 손실을 방지한다. 비타민 A가 결핍되면 번역 후 단계에서 이 결합 단백질의 분비가 차단되어 표피세포(epidermal cells)로의 전달과 공급에 결함이 생긴다.
