유전자 개요
이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 세포 주기(cell cycle)의 음성 조절 인자이며, 최초로 발견된 종양 억제 유전자(tumor suppressor gene)이다. 또한, 이 단백질은 염색질(chromatin)의 항상성 이종염색질(constitutive heterochromatin)을 안정화하여 전반적인 염색질 구조를 유지한다. 활성형인 저인산화된(hypophosphorylated) 단백질은 전사인자(transcription factor) E2F1과 결합한다. 이 유전자의 결함은 소아암인 망막모세포종(retinoblastoma), 방광암, 골육종(osteogenic sarcoma)의 원인이 된다.
