RAN(ras-related nuclear protein)은 RAS 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 소형 GTP 결합 단백질로, 핵공 복합체(nuclear pore complex)를 통한 RNA와 단백질의 이동에 필수적이며 DNA 합성과 세포 주기(cell cycle) 진행 조절에도 관여한다. RAN의 핵 내 국재화에는 RCC1(regulator of chromosome condensation 1)이 필요하고 RAN의 돌연변이는 DNA 합성을 저해하며, 거대분자의 핵-세포질 교환과는 별개로 미세소관(microtubule) 네트워크의 형성과 조직화를 조절해 유사분열(mitosis) 시 미세소관 중합을 제어하는 핵심 신호 분자일 수 있다. 또한 RAN은 안드로겐 수용체(androgen receptor, AR)의 공동활성화 인자로 작용하는데, AR 내 폴리글루타민(polyglutamine) 확장이 일어나면 공동활성화가 약해져 케네디병(Kennedy’s disease) 진행 과정에서 부분적 안드로겐 불감성으로 이어질 수 있다.
