RAB7A는 소포 수송(vesicular transport)을 조절하는 RAS 관련 GTP 결합 단백질(GTP-binding protein) RAB 계열의 구성원으로, 후기 엔도솜(late endosome) 내부 및 후기 엔도솜에서 리소좀(lysosome)으로의 소포 이동을 조절한다. 또한 헬리코박터 파일로리(Helicobacter pylori)의 VacA 세포독소(cytotoxin)에 의한 세포 공포화(vacuolation)에도 관여한다. 고도로 보존된 아미노산 잔기의 돌연변이는 일부 샤르코-마리-투스(Charcot-Marie-Tooth, CMT) 2형 신경병증을 유발하는 것으로 알려져 있다.
