RAB5A는 GDP 결합 활성(GDP binding activity), GTP 결합 활성(GTP binding activity), 및 GTPase 활성(GTPase activity)을 가진다. 아밀로이드 베타(amyloid-beta)의 전세포수송(transcytosis)을 통한 제거, 초기 엔도솜(early endosome)에서 후기 엔도솜(late endosome)으로의 수송, 그리고 세포 외 유출(exocytosis) 조절을 포함한 여러 과정에 관여한다. 세포질 쪽 초기 엔도솜 막(cytoplasmic side of early endosome membrane), 핵질(nucleoplasm), 및 말단 단추(terminal bouton) 등 여러 세포 구성 요소에 위치한다.
