RAB1A는 Ras 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily) GTPase의 일원을 암호화하며, 해당 유전자 가족 구성원들은 비활성 GDP-결합(GDP-bound) 형태와 활성 GTP-결합(GTP-bound) 형태 사이를 순환한다. 이 소형 GTPase(small GTPase)는 소포체(endoplasmic reticulum)에서 골지체(Golgi apparatus)로의 소포(vesicle) 수송을 조절한다. 또한 이 유전자에서 다양한 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing) 전사체 변이체가 확인되었고, 이들은 서로 다른 단백질 이소형(protein isoform)을 암호화한다.
