유전자 개요
PZP 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 임신 후기 혈청에서 높게 발현되며, 알파-2-매크로글로불린(alpha-2-macroglobulin)과 구조적으로 유사하다. 동종사량체(homotetramer)로 작용하는 이 단백질은 네 가지 종류의 단백질분해효소(proteinase) 활성을 모두 억제한다. 또한, 여러 단백질분해효소에 대한 절단 부위를 포함하며, 단백질분해효소가 결합하면 구조 변화를 통해 이를 가두어 활성을 제한한다. 이 단백질은 증상 발현 전 알츠하이머병 환자의 혈청에서 증가하는 것으로 보인다.
