이 유전자는 RNA 분자에 통합된 우리딘(uridine)을 슈도유리딘(pseudouridine)으로 전환하는 슈도유리딘 합성효소(pseudouridine synthase)를 암호화한다. 이 효소는 tRNA 기능과 다수 RNA의 이차 및 삼차 구조 안정화에 필수적인 역할을 할 수 있다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 미토콘드리아 근병증 및 철적아구빈혈(sideroblastic anemia)과 관련이 있다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternate splicing)으로 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variants)가 생성된다.
