이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 단백질 티로신 인산가수분해효소(protein tyrosine phosphatase, PTP) 계열의 구성원입니다. PTP는 세포 성장, 분화, 유사분열 주기, 종양 변환 등 다양한 세포 과정을 조절하는 신호 전달 분자로 알려져 있습니다. 이 PTP는 세포 외 영역, 단일 막 관통 영역, 단일 촉매 도메인을 가지며, 수용체 유형의 PTP에 해당합니다. 또한 이 PTP는 인슐린 의존성 당뇨병(insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, IDDM) 환자 혈청과 반응하는 자가 항원으로 발견되어, 당뇨병에서의 자가 면역에 대한 잠재적 표적이 될 수 있습니다. 대체 스플라이싱으로 인해 여러 전사체 변이체가 생성됩니다.
