이 유전자에 의해 암호화된 단백질은 분비되는 헤파린 결합 성장 인자(growth factor)이다. 이 단백질은 세포 성장과 생존, 세포 이동, 혈관신생(angiogenesis) 및 종양형성(tumorigenesis)에서 중요한 역할을 한다. 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)과 대체 프로모터(promoter)의 사용으로 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variants)가 생성된다.
