이 유전자는 부갑상선 호르몬(parathyroid hormone) 계열 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 호르몬은 수용체(receptor)인 PTHR1을 통해 연골 내 골격 발달과 유선 및 치아 형성 시 상피-간질 상호작용을 조절한다. 종양에 의한 체액성 고칼슘혈증의 대부분을 야기하며, 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 단지증 E2(brachydactyly type E2, BDE2)와 연관된다. 이 유전자에는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이형이 존재한다. 또한 개시 AUG 코돈 하류의 비-AUG(CUG 및 GUG) 시작 부위로부터의 대체 번역 개시 증거가 있으며, 이는 이 호르몬의 핵 형태를 생성한다.
