PSME2는 11S 조절체(PA28)의 beta 소단위체를 암호화하며, 이 소단위체는 gamma-인터페론(gamma-interferon)에 의해 유도되는 두 11S 소단위체 중 하나입니다. 11S 조절체(PA28)는 26S 프로테아좀의 19S 조절체를 대체하여 면역프로테아좀을 구성하고, class I MHC 펩타이드 처리에 필수적입니다. 또한 염색체 4, 5, 8, 10, 13에서 6개의 위유전자(pseudogene)가 확인되었습니다.
