이 유전자는 프로테아좀 B형 계열(T1B 계열)의 구성원으로, 20S 핵심 베타 소단위체(subunit)를 암호화한다. 프로테아좀은 고도로 정렬된 고리 모양의 20S 핵심 구조를 가진 다중 촉매 단백질 분해 효소 복합체이다. 이 유전자는 주요 조직 적합 복합체(MHC, major histocompatibility complex)의 Class II 영역에 위치하며, 감마 인터페론(interferon)에 의해 발현이 유도되고, 면역 프로테아좀(immunoproteasome)에서 촉매 소단위체 1(프로테아좀 베타 6 소단위체)을 대체한다.
