PSMA4는 20S 프로테아소메(proteasome)의 핵심 알파 서브유닛(alpha subunit)을 암호화한다. 이 프로테아소메는 28개의 비동일한 서브유닛이 4개의 고리로 구성된 고도로 정돈된 고리형 구조이다. 프로테아소메는 ATP와 유비퀴틴(ubiquitin) 의존적으로 펩티드를 절단한다.
