PSMA1은 고리 모양의 20S 핵심 구조를 갖는 다촉매성 프로테이나아제 복합체인 프로테아좀(proteasome)의 20S 핵심 알파 소단위체를 암호화하며, 펩티다아제 T1A(peptidase T1A) 계열에 속한다. 이 20S 핵심 구조는 서로 동일하지 않은 28개 소단위체로 이루어진 4개의 고리로 구성되는데, 그중 2개 고리는 7개의 알파 소단위체로, 나머지 2개 고리는 7개의 베타 소단위체로 이루어진다. 프로테아좀은 진핵세포 전반에 높은 농도로 분포하면서 비리소좀 경로에서 ATP/유비퀴틴(ubiquitin) 의존적으로 펩타이드를 절단하며, 대체 스플라이싱을 통해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이가 생성된다.
