PRSS3는 세린 단백질분해효소(serine protease)의 트립신(trypsin) 계열에 속하는 트립시노겐(trypsinogen)을 암호화하며, 그 산물은 뇌와 췌장에서 발현되고 일반적인 트립신 억제제에 저항성을 보인다. 이 효소는 라이신(lysine) 또는 아르기닌(arginine)의 카복실기가 관여하는 펩타이드(peptide) 결합에 작용한다. 유전자는 9번 염색체의 T 세포 수용체 베타 가변 고아(T cell receptor beta variable orphan) 좌위에 위치하며, 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 네 가지 전사체 변이가 보고되어 있다.
