이 유전자는 말초 신경계 뉴런에서 발견되는 세포골격 단백질을 암호화한다. 암호화된 단백질은 중간섬유(intermediate filament) 단백질 중 제3형이며, 데스민(desmin)과 같은 다른 세포골격 단백질과 상동성을 보인다. 이는 광수용체에서 발견되는 페리페린(peripherin)과는 다른 단백질이다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 근위축성 측삭 경화증(amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)에 대한 감수성과 관련이 있다.
