이 유전자는 간에서 합성되어 혈장으로 분비되는 간 비타민 K 의존성 당단백질(glycoprotein)을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 인산인지질 표면에서 활성화된 제10인자(activated factor X)를 직접 저해하기 위해 단백질 Z 의존성 단백질분해효소 저해제(protein Z-dependent protease inhibitor)와 복합체를 형성하여 혈액 응고 조절에 관여한다. 이 단백질 결핍은 허혈성 동맥 질환 및 태아 손실 위험 증가와 관련이 있다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 단백질 Z 결핍의 원인이 된다. 대체 스플라이싱으로 인해 여러 전사체 변이체가 생성된다.
