이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 다섯 개의 연속적인 옥타펩타이드 반복 서열을 포함하는 매우 불안정한 영역을 지닙니다. 해당 단백질은 세포막에 부착된 당단백질(glycoprotein)이며, 막대 모양 구조로 응집되는 경향을 보입니다. 이 유전자는 염색체 20번 상에서 발견되며, 해당 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질과 생화학적 및 구조적으로 유사한 단백질을 암호화하는 유전자보다 약 2만 염기쌍(kbp) 상류에 위치합니다. 이 유전자의 반복 영역과 다른 부위의 돌연변이는 크로이츠펠트-야코프병, 치명적 가족성 불면증, 게르스트만-스트라우스 증후군, 헌팅턴병 유사 1형, 쿠루병 등과 연관되어 왔습니다. 이 유전자는 구조적으로 관련 없는 더 작은 단백질인 AltPrp를 암호화하는 중복 열린 해독틀(open reading frame)을 가지고 있으며, 대안적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 여러 전사체 변이형이 생성됩니다.
