이 유전자 산물은 관절 연골 표면에 위치한 연골세포와 일부 윤활막 세포에서 합성되는 큰 프로테오글리칸(proteoglycan)입니다. 이 단백질은 콘드로이틴 황산(chondroitin sulfate)과 케라탄 황산(keratan sulfate) 글리코사미노글리칸을 모두 포함합니다. 이는 연골 표면에서 경계 윤활제(boundary lubricant) 역할을 하며 윤활액의 탄성 흡수 및 에너지 소산에 기여합니다. 이 유전자 변이는 캠토닥틸리-관절병증-고기형-심낭염 증후군(camptodactyly-arthropathy-coxa vara-pericarditis syndrome)을 유발합니다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)은 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variants)를 생성합니다.
