이 유전자는 통증 인지에 중요한 역할을 하는 감각 신경 세포 분화의 전사 조절 인자(transcriptional regulator)를 암호화한다. 암호화된 단백질은 N-말단 PRDI-BF1 및 RIZ 상동성(PR) 도메인, SET 도메인, 그리고 세 개의 C-말단 C2H2 징크핑거(zinc finger) DNA 결합 도메인을 포함한다. 이 유전자의 자연 발생적 돌연변이는 선천성 무통증(congenital insensitivity to pain, CIP) 및 말초 감각 신경과 자율 신경에 영향을 미치는 유전성 감각 및 자율 신경병증(hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies, HSAN’s)과 관련이 있다. 이 유전자의 조절 이상은 만성 골수성 백혈병을 포함한 고형암 및 혈액암과 연관된다.
