이 유전자는 세린 엑소펩티다아제(serine exopeptidase)의 펩티다아제 S28(peptidase S28) 계열에 속하는 단백질을 암호화한다. 암호화된 전전구단백질(preproprotein)은 단백질 가수분해 처리를 거쳐 성숙한 리소솜 프롤릴카르복시펩티다아제(lysosomal prolylcarboxypeptidase)로 생성되며, 이 효소는 안지오텐신 II·III(angiotensin II, III) 및 des-Arg9-브라디키닌(des-Arg9-bradykinin)과 같은 펩타이드에서 프롤린(proline)에 연결된 C-말단 아미노산을 절단한다. 절단은 산성 pH에서 일어나지만 일부 기질에 대해서는 중성 pH에서도 효소 활성이 유지되며, 세포 기질 연관 프리칼리크레인(prekallikrein)의 활성화 인자로도 작용한다. 이 효소의 기질 중 하나인 안지오텐신 II(angiotensin II)가 혈압 및 전해질 균형 조절에 중요한 역할을 한다는 점에서, 이 유전자는 본태성 고혈압(essential hypertension)과 연관될 가능성이 있다.
