이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 단백질 인산가수분해효소 1 (PP1, protein phosphatase 1) 저해제 계열에 속한다. 이 단백질은 평활근 미오신 인산가수분해효소(smooth muscle myosin phosphatase)의 저해제이며, 인산화(phosphorylation)되었을 때 더 높은 저해 활성을 보인다. 미오신 인산가수분해효소의 저해는 미오신 인산화 증가와 평활근 수축 강화로 이어진다. 이 유전자에 대해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 대안적 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체(alternatively spliced transcript variants)가 확인되었다.
