유전자 개요
이 유전자는 점액단백질(sialomucin protein) 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 암호화된 단백질은 원래 사구체족세포(glomerular podocyte)의 중요한 성분으로 확인되었다. 족세포는 사구체 기저 막(glomerular basement membrane)의 외부 측을 덮는 상호 맞물리는 발돌기(foot process)를 가진 고도로 분화된 상피세포이다. 암호화된 단백질의 다른 생물학적 활성으로는 막 단백질 복합체에서 Na+/H+ 교환기 조절 인자(Na+/H+ exchanger regulatory factor)와 결합하여 세포내 골격 요소(cytoskeletal elements)로 작용하는 것, 조혈세포(hematopoetic cell) 분화에 역할을 하는 것, 그리고 혈관내피(vascular endothelium) 세포에서 발현되어 L-selectin에 결합하는 것이 있다.
