PLUNC (BPIFA1) 유전자는 설치류 plunc 유전자의 인간 상동체(homolog)입니다. 이 유전자는 마우스 유전자와 마찬가지로 상부 기도 및 비인두 부위에서 특이적으로 발현됩니다. 이 유전자가 암호화하는 항균 단백질은 그람 음성균에 대해 항균 활성을 나타냅니다. 상부 기도 자극에 대한 염증 반응에 관여하는 것으로 여겨지며, 비소세포 폐암(non-small-cell lung cancer)에서 미세 전이 탐지를 위한 잠재적인 분자 표지자 역할도 할 수 있습니다. 3’ UTR에서 대체 스플라이싱으로 인해 여러 전사체 변이가 감지되었으나, 세 가지의 전체 길이만 알려져 있습니다.
