PLTP는 사람 혈장에 존재하는 최소 두 가지 지질전달단백질(lipid transfer protein) 중 하나로, 중성지방이 풍부한 지질단백질(lipoprotein)로부터 고밀도 지질단백질(high density lipoprotein, HDL)로 인지질(phospholipid)을 전달한다. 이 과정을 통해 HDL 입자의 크기를 조절할 뿐 아니라 콜레스테롤 대사에도 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 최소 두 가지 확인되었다.
