유전자 개요

PLP1은 미엘린(myelin)의 주된 구성 성분인 막관통 프로테오리피드 단백질(transmembrane proteolipid protein)을 암호화한다. 암호화된 단백질은 미엘린초(myelin sheath)의 압축과 안정화 및 유지뿐 아니라 희소돌기아교세포(oligodendrocyte)의 발달과 축삭(axon) 생존에도 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있다. PLP1의 돌연변이는 펠리체우스-메르츠바허병(Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease)과 강직성 하반신마비 2형(spastic paraplegia type 2)을 유발하며, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 DM20 변이체를 비롯한 여러 전사체 변이체가 생성된다.
