PLA2G2A 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 phospholipase A2(PLA2) 가족 그룹 II에 속하는 분비형 세포외 효소(enzyme)로, 낮은 분자량을 가지며 촉매에 칼슘 이온을 필요로 한다. 이 효소는 phosphoglyceride의 sn-2 지방산(fatty acid) 아실 에스터 결합을 가수분해(hydrolysis)하여 유리 지방산과 lysophospholipid를 방출하며, 생체막(biomembrane)에서 인지질 대사(phospholipid metabolism) 조절에 참여하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 또한 이 유전자에는 서로 다른 5’ UTR(5’ untranslated region)을 가진 여러 선택적 접합 전사 변이체(alternatively spliced transcript variants)가 발견되었다.
