이 유전자 산물은 이중 가닥 RNA(dsRNA) 결합 시 자가인산화(autophosphorylation)를 통해 활성화되는 세린/트레오닌 단백질 키나아제(serine/threonine protein kinase)입니다. 활성화된 단백질은 번역 개시 인자 EIF2S1을 인산화시켜 단백질 합성을 억제합니다. 또한, 이 단백질은 망간 이온과 헤파린에 의해서도 활성화됩니다. 암호화된 단백질은 다양한 DNA 및 RNA 바이러스에 대한 선천 면역 반응에서 중요한 역할을 수행합니다.
