PIM1이 암호화하는 단백질은 세린/트레오닌 단백질 키나아제(Ser/Thr protein kinase) 계열의 PIM 하위계열에 속하며, 주로 B-림프구계 및 골수계 세포주에서 발현되고 조혈계 악성종양과 전립선암(prostate cancer)에서 과발현된다. 혈액세포의 신호전달에 관여하여 세포 증식과 생존에 모두 기여함으로써 종양 형성 과정에서 선택적 이점을 제공한다. 사람과 오솔로그(ortholog) 마우스 유전자 모두 상류의 비-AUG(CUG) 및 하류 AUG 개시 코돈을 이용한 대체 in-frame 번역 개시를 통해 세포 내 국재(localization) 양상이 다른 두 가지 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 것으로 보고되었다.
