이 유전자는 85 kD 조절 소단위체를 암호화하며, 포스파티딜이노시톨 3-키나아제(Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase)는 포스파티딜이노시톨의 이노시톨 고리 3번 위치를 인산화시킨다. 이 효소는 110 kD 촉매 소단위체와 85, 55, 또는 50 kD의 조절 소단위체로 구성된다. PIK3R1 유전자의 돌연변이는 인슐린 저항성과 연관되며, 인슐린의 대사 작용에서 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 유전자의 대체 스플라이싱은 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 네 가지 전사체 변이체를 생성한다.
