PFKL 유전자는 D-프럭토스 6-인산염을 D-프럭토스 1,6-이인산염으로 전환시키는 효소(enzyme)의 간(L) 소단위를 암호화한다. 이는 포도당 대사(해당과정)의 핵심 단계이다. 이 효소는 네 개의 소단위체로 이루어진 복합체로, 조직마다 다른 유전자에 의해 지정되는 다양한 소단위체로 구성될 수 있다. 대안적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 인해 여러 전사 변이체(transcript variant)가 생성된다.
