이 유전자는 PDK/BCKDK 단백질 키나아제(protein kinase) 계열에 속하며, 히스티딘 키나아제 도메인(histidine kinase domain)을 가진 미토콘드리아 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 미토콘드리아 기질에 위치하며, 해당 단백질의 소단위체 중 하나를 인산화(phosphorylating)함으로써 피루브산 탈수소효소 복합체(pyruvate dehydrogenase complex)를 억제하여 포도당 대사(glucose metabolism) 조절에 기여한다. 이 유전자의 발현은 글루코코르티코이드(glucocorticoids), 레티노산(retinoic acid), 인슐린(insulin)에 의해 조절된다.
