PDGFB는 혈소판 유래 성장 인자(platelet-derived growth factor, PDGF) 및 혈관 내피 성장 인자(vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF) 단백질 가족의 한 구성원을 암호화한다. 절단을 거쳐 생성된 PDGF 아단위 B는 동종 이량체를 형성하거나 PDGF 아단위 A와 이종 이량체를 형성하여 PDGF 수용체(receptor) 티로신 키나아제를 활성화하고 다양한 발생 과정에 참여한다. 이 유전자의 변이는 수막종(meningioma)과 관련이 있으며, 22번과 17번 염색체 간 상호 전좌는 드문 피부 종양인 융기성 피부섬유육종(dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans)과 연관된다.
